Outpatient programs are cost-effective venues through which teens can seek treatment while maintaining a daily routine conducive to their education, family life and social engagements.
Through a reputable outpatient program, teens can maintain academic schedules while simultaneously staying accountable to outpatient program leaders, who can offer a bridge between teen addicts and concerned parents. Outpatient treatment programs offer an advantage above and beyond inpatient residential treatment, namely the ability to stay connected with family members, school and work – while still tending to recovery-related activities, for a portion of the price that an inpatient rehabilitation stint would cost. Many outpatient programs run group treatment sessions thrice weekly, for example. Others offer full weekday courses. Schedules vary by outpatient program.
THE FIRST PART OF THE EXPERIENCE
Upon entering the outpatient teen rehab center, the teen addict will complete an “intake assessment.” The intake process is fairly simple – paperwork is filled out, urine and blood samples are taken and interviews with staff members take place. The addict is introduced to the facility and given a tour of the premises. The next step is that the family and child are given all of the teen rehab options available to choose from.
Once the teen has formed a relationship with the drug rehab clinician with whom the addict will work, the detoxification treatment regimen begins.
Detoxifying from drugs and alcohol is completed under medical supervision. Although 24-hour care is not offered by outpatient programs, clinicians and therapists check in with patients every chance they can. Personal attention is given to every patient. It is important for teens participating in an outpatient program to be transparent, honest and practice full disclosure with treatment team members. Lying or deceiving team members will only hinder one’s progress and perpetuate feelings of self-contempt.
BUILDING A FOUNDATION FOR A NEW LIFE
Outpatient treatment programs offer many of the same benefits extended by inpatient residential rehabilitation centers, only in an abbreviated format.
When inpatient treatment is not logistically possible, family members can trust that an outpatient rehab center is often effective at jumpstarting a teen’s sobriety for the long haul. A reputable treatment program may preclude a substance abuse problem from growing in size and strength throughout adulthood.
THE UNIQUE VALUE
Teens find strength and solace in the communal setting provided by outpatient rehab classes and group discussions.
Venues through which teens connect in a teen rehab center for prescription drug abuse include:
- Group therapy sessions that deal with relevant topics such as grief, peer pressure and parental expectations
- Individualized therapy to address underlying issues and/or undiagnosed co-occurring disorders
- Alternative therapy approaches such as equine therapy, art therapy and acupuncture
- Nutritious meals, fitness offerings and team sports in many cases
- Exposure to 12-step meetings such as Narcotics Anonymous; transportation is generally provided to and from 12-step meeting venues
These offerings are a few examples of what outpatient treatment centers can provide, and are healthy alternatives to the use and abuse of drugs and alcohol. In an outpatient drug rehab program, teens have the opportunity to build a new life for themselves. Through early intervention, teens learn healthy ways with which to deal with life’s stressors and face subsequent challenges.
Outpatient programs encourage outlets in which teens can relieve stress in healthy ways, such as:
- Writing in a journal
- Playing a musical instrument
- Engaging in a fitness program
- Practicing yoga
- Praying, if the teen so chooses
- Cooking, crafting or carrying out any other hobby of interest
Taking contrary action against a budding drug addiction in teens is imperative to the teen’s well-being and success throughout adulthood. Early intervention helps to prevent the onset of a more serious, complicated and debilitating substance abuse problem.
TEEN PROGRAMS UNDERSTAND TEENAGERS
Outpatient teen rehab center staff members keep abreast of current issues facing teens.
They are employed with knowledgeable staff members who genuinely care about each teen patient’s experience. In other words, overcoming addiction often means beating the brain at its own game. If teens are willing to take direction provided by the outpatient program leaders, doing so may help families to nip the addictive growth in the bud.
