How Common Is LSD Addiction?

LSD, or lysergic acid diethylamide, has found its place primarily in underground clubs or raves. Ecstasy and even PCP are more likely to be found in these settings, but LSD still finds its way into the mix.

LSD Addiction Statistics

The following are facts and statistics about LSD use and addiction:

  • The National Survey on Drug Use and Health (NSDUH) estimated that 200,000 plus people use LSD for the first time every year. This means that about 9.7% of people older than 12 have used LSD at least once.
  • Since 2002 and the introduction of better drug abuse education the number of people abusing LSD has dropped. An example of this decline in high school and college-aged students can be seen in the NSDUH report that states 12.1% of 18-25 year olds have used LSD in their lifetime compared with 15.9% in 2002.
  • Because of its high potency and potential for negative effects, hallucinations or flashbacks, regular or habitual abuse is not widespread.

Physical versus Psychological LSD Addiction

A bad trip usually leads to LSD users ceasing abuse or giving it up altogether. This is because LSD is not physically addictive. Other drugs cause a strong physical dependency that is accompanied by tolerance and withdrawal symptoms. However, LSD does not produce these problems. For this reason, addiction can be largely avoided.

The main reason people should avoid LSD is the strong psychological addiction that results.

A psychological addiction is only properly treated in an intensive rehab program that specializes in holistic integrated treatment. This approach reaches the physical, emotional, spiritual, mental and behavioral aspects of addiction. Because of LSD’s psychoactive effects, mental health issues (such as depression, schizophrenia, bipolar disorder or panic attacks) are common in LSD users. This will require a knowledgeable rehab center that can treat Dual Diagnosis patients.

What Can I Do about LSD Abuse or Addiction?

Support for LSD addiction recovery is available. You can find peers in rehab who empathize with your situation. The professionals in rehab will give you the most comprehensive treatment possible. Support groups and group therapies can help address and identify the root causes of addiction, and behavioral therapies will work with you to identify relapse triggers.

Because LSD abuse produces a psychological addiction, getting quality treatment for LSD addiction is critical. You don’t have to suffer with LSD addiction alone. Enlist the help of a rehab center.
